Everyone with a quest for healthy hair should have a hair goal…Joann
Recently, there has been spoken and unspoken argument about which is better, relaxed or natural? Some have transitioned out of frustration with their relaxed hair, some due to great admiration of naturals, others are just following the trend; the danger of this is that it could lead to frustration later on.
A great man once said “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.” There are several who have transitioned to natural and couldn’t cope, so they decided to return to relaxed.
The result: Some people’s hair are doing well, while others are not.
Relaxed hair is not meant for everyone, so also, natural hair. The best place to start is to ask yourself… WHY?
Why do you want natural hair?
Why do you want relaxed hair?
I believe everyone with a quest for healthy hair should have a hair goal. This will influence the decisions you make on your hair journey.
HOW TO KNOW IF RELAXED OR NATURAL HAIR IS MEANT FOR YOU
- What is your hair goal?
What do you want to achieve by maintaining your hair? You might want waist-length hair, short afro or any length as long as it is healthy. If you don’t have a hair goal, think about it, and write it down because goals are meant to be written.
- How patient are you?
If you want natural waist-length, you can achieve that in an average of 7 years; however, the same length can be achieved in an average of 4 years with relaxed hair. Also bear in mind that detangling natural hair takes longer time than relaxed hair, so, your wash day might take a whole day.
- Why do you want to transition?
You just love the volume and versatility of natural hair, right? Relaxed hair is permanently straight, and sleek, except you curl it and it may not last as long as natural curls.
You will need to know the pros and cons of natural hair as well as the pros and cons of relaxed hair.
- Healthy hair?
If you want healthy hair, you can have it with either natural or relaxed hair. Natural hair doesn’t make hair healthy automatically; there is a lot of work you need to do to achieve that gorgeous look.
- Sensitive Scalp:
For ladies with relaxed hair;
If your scalp is very sensitive and you can cope with maintaining natural hair, then transition. If not, natural is not equal to healthy.
In conclusion if you want relaxed hair, know why you want it; if you want to be natural, know why you want it.
